Manuel António Mendes dos Santos

Manuel António Mendes dos Santos CMF (born March 20, 1960 in Lamego , Portugal ) is a Portuguese clergyman and acting bishop of São Tomé and Príncipe .

Life

Dos Santos was born in Lamego in northern Portugal. He still has three brothers and four sisters. He studied theology and philosophy from 1978 to 1985 at the Instituto dos Ciencias Humanas e Teologicas in Porto and at the Catholic University of Lisbon . In 1980 he became a novice , made temporary vows on September 26, 1980 in Fátima , and perpetual vows on September 16, 1983 , and became a friar in the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary . He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1985 by Bishop António de Castro Xavier Monteiro . In 1994/95 he worked as a missionary in São Tomé and headed a total of three parishes. After returning to Portugal, he worked as a priest in Setúbal for a few years . Since 2001 he has been Provincial of his Order for Portugal. From 2003 to 2005 he was chairman of the National Conference of Superiors.

On December 1, 2006, he succeeded Abílio Rodas de Sousa Ribas Bishop of São Tomé and Principe. He received his episcopal ordination through Cardinal José Saraiva Martins on February 17, 2007.
