Manuel Palau Boix (born January 4, 1893 in Alfara del Patriarca; died February 18, 1967 in Valencia ) was a Spanish composer , music teacher and conductor .

Life

Manuel Palau received his first music lessons from Timoteo Ferrer in Alfara del Pariarca at the age of seven. In 1914 he began his studies at the Conservatory of Valencia with solfeggia and piano . In 1915 he met the Catalan composer Enrique Granados on a ship that stopped in the port of Valencia on the way. In 1919 he completed his composition and piano studies with Pedro Sosa, Juan Cortés and Eduardo López-Chávarri Marco.

In 1921 his Zarzuela Beniflor, composed in 1918, premiered at the Razufa Theater in Valencia. From 1922 to 1927 he worked as a music critic for La Correspondencia de Valencia . He went to Paris in 1926 to complete his studies at the local conservatory with A. Bertelín, Jacques Ibert , C. Dycke and Guy Rondón by 1933. At the same time he studied harmony and counterpoint with Charles Koechlin and obtained valuable advice from Maurice Ravel , who also corrected individual works for him.

After his studies he became head of the composition class at the Conservatorio Superior of Valencia, where he was appointed director in 1951. He is considered one of the most important composers in Spain at the beginning of the 20th century, as he was not only a composer but also the leading teacher of composition at the Conservatory in Valencia and thus had a decisive influence on the subsequent generation of composers in this region.

In 1929 he became artistic director of the Sociedad Musical Instructiva Santa Cecilia de Cullera , Province of Valencia. In 1948 the Instituto Valenciano de Musicología y Folklores de la Institución Alfonso el Magnánimo was founded and Palau was appointed artistic director. He held this position until his death. In 1954 he was awarded the Medal Insignia de la Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio by the Minister of Culture. In 1957 the Banda del Centro Artístico Musical de Moncada appointed him honorary conductor.
