María Elena Moyano Delgado
The Peruvian María Elena Moyano Delgado (born November 29, 1958 in Lima ; † February 15, 1992 ibid) was President of the Federación Popular de Mujeres de Villa El Salvador (Fepomuves) and mayor of the Villa El Salvador district of Lima.
Life
María Moyano was born on November 29, 1958 in Barranco , a district of Lima . As a teenager she was politically active in the youth organization "Movimiento de Jóvenes Pobladores" ( Spanish movement of young settlers ).
In November 1985, María Moyano was elected President of Fepomuves, and in March 1988 she was re-elected. Under her leadership, public kitchens were introduced and the “Vaso de Leche” ( a glass of milk ) program was founded, which provides poor children with milk.
On February 15, 1992, María Moyano was murdered by members of the terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso in Villa El Salvador. She was shot with machine guns in front of her two children, and her body was blown with dynamite . Several thousand people attended her funeral despite threats from the Sendero Luminoso .
On May 23, 2002, María Moyano was proclaimed the "heroine of the nation" by the Peruvian Congress .
