The district of Villa El Salvador is one of the 43 urban districts of the Lima Metropolitana region in Peru . The district has an area of 35.46 km². The 2017 census counted 393,254 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 254,641, in 2007 it was 381,790. Mayor of the district is Kevin Yñigo Peralta (2019-2022).
history
In 1971, state lands were occupied by families from rural areas of Peru. After violent clashes between the occupiers and the police, the Lima city administration accepted the occupation and the Villa El Salvador was built.
Villa El Salvador has been an official district of Lima since June 1, 1983.
In 1987, Villa El Salvador received the Prince of Asturias Foundation Prize for Unity for the self-government that its residents built with volunteer work . Also in 1987 Villa El Salvador received the United Nation's “Ambassador of Peace” (Mensajera de La Paz) award .
María Elena Moyano Delgado was mayor of Villa El Salvador from 1985 until her murder in 1992.

The soccer team of Villa El Salvador is "Defensor Villa del Mar", which plays in the local stadium "Iván Elias Moreno".
Town twinning
Since September 24, 2006, Villa El Salvador has been a twin town of the German city of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg .
