The Lurigancho district is located in the province of Lima in Peru . The district was founded in 1894 and has an area of 236.47 km². It has a rapidly increasing population. In the 2017 census, the population was 240,814. In 1993 this was 100,240, in 2007 it was 169,359. The district administration is located in Chosica .
Geographical location
The district is located in the east of the Lima Province. It has a longitudinal extension in the WSW-ONO direction of almost 33 km and a width of 5 km. The southwestern district boundary is about 10 km from the city center of Lima ( Cercado de Lima ), which is further south-west . In the northeast, the district extends to the confluence of the Río Santa Eulalia in the Río Rímac . The Río Rímac runs below Chosica along the southern district boundary. The urban areas of the district lie in the river valley of the Río Rímac, which falls in the district from 950 m in the east to 300 m in the west. The valley is flanked on both sides by mountains, some of which are over 2000 m high. The two important hydropower plants Moyopampa and Huampaní are located in the district .
