The Miraflores district is one of the 43 urban districts of the Lima Metropolitana region in Peru . In the 2017 census, 99,337 inhabitants lived on its 9.62 km² area. In 1993 the population was 87,113, in 2007 it was 85,065. Miraflores, together with San Isidro, is one of the richest districts of Lima. The city of Miraflores and the district of Miraflores are congruent.

Miraflores covers 9.62 km² and is on average 79 meters above sea level. It is one of a total of 43 boroughs in the Lima Metropolitana region . Miraflores is bordered by San Isidro to the north, Surquillo to the northeast, Santiago de Surco to the southeast and Barranco to the south . In the west lies the Pacific coast .
climate
Miraflores has a temperate, maritime climate. The annual average temperature is 18.2 degrees Celsius, the annual rainfall is only 9 millimeters. August is the coldest month with an average temperature of 15.1 degrees Celsius, February is the warmest month with an average temperature of 22.3 degrees.
history
On January 2, 1857, Miraflores officially became a municipality of Lima.
On January 15, 1881, the battle of Miraflores took place in the saltpeter war . Peruvian units tried in vain to stop the advance of the Chilean army towards Lima. Because the Peruvians defended themselves valiantly, Miraflores is still called Ciudad Heroica - “City of Heroes” - in memory of this battle . The day after the Battle of Miraflores, the Chileans captured the Peruvian capital, Lima.
According to reports by Paz Soldán, Miraflores still had no more than about 100 inhabitants in 1887, a census from this time put the population at 636 people. Today Miraflores has around 93,000 inhabitants.
On July 16, 1992, the guerrilla organization Shining Path ( Sendero Luminoso ) carried out a car bomb attack in Miraflores, in which 25 people died and more than 150 people were injured.
Economy and Infrastructure
education
Due to the prosperity of the borough, some of the most famous schools are located in Miraflores, such as Markham College, the German School Alexander von Humboldt, the Pestalozzi School and the Carmelitas School.
Culture
Miraflores is an affluent borough and therefore has many cultural centers, theaters, cinemas and art museums.
The only pre-Hispanic building in Miraflores is the Huaca Pucllana clay pyramid , a temple of the Lima culture from before the Incas .

Most of the international hotels are located in Miraflores, such as the Hilton or the Ritz .
Huaca Pucllana
The only pre-Hispanic building in Miraflores is the Huaca Pucllana. The temple complex from the 6th century AD covers about 15 hectares. It has been restored since 1983 .
Kennedy Park
The Parque Kennedy is the old center of Miraflores. The old church of Virgen Milagrosa and the town hall are located at its limit . Many street performers and hawkers can be found in the park.
Centro Comercial Larcomar
The Centro Comercial Larcomar is a large shopping center with a multiplex cinema. It is located in one of the most picturesque spots in Miraflores. The famous Torres Telmex y Marriott are right behind the shopping center .
Costa Verde
The Costa Verde is a stretch of coast with several sand and pebble beaches, some of which is located in Miraflores. Paragliding can be done from the cliffs and the water is good for surfing . Surfing has a long tradition in Miraflores. In the 1930s, Carlos Dogny brought the first surfboard back from a visit to Hawaii and subsequently founded the well-known Waikiki surf club on Miraflores Beach.
