The Lima District , also Cercado de Lima , is one of the 43 municipalities in the Lima Metropolitana Region in Peru . It has an area of ​​21.98 km². The 2017 census counted 268,352 residents. In 1993 the population was 340,422, in 2007 299,493. The district was founded in 1823. It is located at an altitude of about 160  m .

Geographical location

The historic center of the city of Lima is located within the Lima District. The district has a maximum longitudinal extension in east-west direction of about 9.3 km and a maximum width of about 4.5 km. The river Río Rímac forms the northern boundary of the district. The district of Lima borders in the north on the districts of San Martín de Porres and Rímac , in the east on the districts of San Juan de Lurigancho and El Agustino , in the south on the districts of La Victoria , Lince , Jesús María , Breña , Pueblo Libre and San Miguel as well to the west to the province of Callao .
