María Teresa Ruiz (born September 24, 1946 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean astronomer . She was the first woman to receive the Chilean National Prize for Exact Sciences , part of the Chilean National Prize.

biography

Ruiz was born in Santiago de Chile in 1946. After completing her school education, she was the first woman to successfully study astronomy at the University of Chile . Then she was one of the pioneers who studied at Princeton University and received her PhD in astrophysics . She then took up a postdoc position at the Trieste Astronomical Observatory . Ruiz also worked in the Department of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for two years before receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship . Since May 2016 she has been a member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences and Professor of Astronomy at the University of Chile. She is also a member and director of the Centro de Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines (CATA).

Discoveries

She discovered Kelu-1 , a system of two brown dwarfs located in the Hydra constellation , about 61 light years from Earth.
