Marc-Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (born August 16, 1696 in Paris , † August 22, 1764 ibid) was a French nobleman and politician.

Live and act

He came from the noble family de Voyer d'Argenson, who originally came from Touraine and had been high officials in the French crown for several generations. In 1720 he took over from his father Marc René d'Argenson (1652-1721) the post of chief police officer ( Lieutenant général de la police ). In 1742 he became Minister of War and reorganized the army fighting in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–48). In 1751 he founded the Saint-Cyr Military School . He was the younger brother of René Louis d'Argenson , and like him he was well acquainted with Voltaire from his schooldays at the Jesuit college Louis-le-Grand , to whom he rendered various friendship services. He was married to Anne Larcher (* 1706).

In 1726 he became an honorary member of the Académie des Sciences .
