Marcel Émile Verdet

Marcel Émile Verdet (born March 13, 1824 in Nîmes , † June 3, 1866 in Avignon ) was a French physicist . He worked in the field of magnetism and optics and complemented the work of Augustin-Jean Fresnel . He was also an early advocate of conservation of energy . He was the managing editor of the journal Annales de Chimie et de Physique .

He was a student of the Écoles normales supérieures , in 1845 he became a lecturer and in 1863 professor of physics at the École polytechnique (predecessor of Alfred Cornu ).

The Verdet constant is named after him.
