Marcel Maeyer

Marcel Maeyer (born July 23, 1920 in Sint-Niklaas ; † October 6, 2018 ) was a Belgian art historian and painter .

life and work

Marcel Maeyer was already enthusiastic about painting as a child and was taught by his uncle, the painter Alfons Proost (1880–1957). His father ran a hair salon. Marcel Meyer met his wife in 1944. Maeyer studied art history at Ghent University . He worked as a curator at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Photos are the basis of his painting. He created his own paintings during his time as an employee of the museum. In the 1960s he received a professorship for art history at the University of Groningen . Maeyer then devoted himself exclusively to painting.

Marcel Maeyer exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1976), the  São Paulo Biennale (1979) and the  Documenta IX  in Kassel (1992). Extensive solo exhibitions have taken place in the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp (1997) and in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (2009).

He died on October 6, 2018, less than 3 months after his wife's death.
