Marcel "Cello" Mehlem (born March 1, 1995 in Germersheim ) is a German soccer player who is under contract with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise . His younger brother Marvin is also a soccer player.
Career
Mehlem moved from his hometown club, SV Blankenloch , to the youth of Karlsruher SC . There he went through the youth teams from U-12 to U-19 before he was moved up to the second team in 2014. He graduated from high school in 2013 at the KSC's partner school, the Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Karlsruhe . After more than 70 appearances in the major league , he made his first professional appearance for the first team in the Second Bundesliga on the 23rd match day of the 2016/17 season, when he played for Grischa Prömel in the 92nd minute in the 2-0 home win against Hannover 96 was substituted on. After the KSC was relegated to the 3rd division, Mehlem signed a professional contract valid until 2019 in May 2017. There he moved into the starting line-up for the first time on matchday 9 in the 0-1 defeat against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach after injuries to Kai Bülow and Andreas Hofmann in the defensive midfield. Due to his running-intensive and self-sacrificing style of play, Mehlem was able to maintain his regular place even after the recovery of Captain Bülow and scored his first goal in professional football on November 24, 2017 (17th matchday) in the 2-0 away win against SC Paderborn in the 61st minute of the game . With the KSC he reached the promotion relegation at the end of the season, but failed in the FC Erzgebirge Aue .
For the 2018/19 season he moved to the second Belgian league at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at his own request . There he was soon able to establish himself in the defensive midfield, but was occasionally also used as a right defender.
