Marcel Vanco (born March 19, 1895 in Marseille , † July 15, 1987 in Roubaix ) was a French football player .

Club career

The defender Vanco came in 1909 as a teenager to Stade Helvétique Marseille . At the club, which mainly comprised players from Switzerland, he was in the squad of the first team during the 1912/1913 season and reached the USFSA championship finals with this . As one of only two French, the then 18-year-old was a member of the final team in April 1913 and was able to win the title by beating FC Rouen 1-0 . In 1914 game operations were largely stopped due to the First World War . During the war he fought as a soldier and took part in the Battle of Verdun , but he continued to play football at times while wearing the Olympique Marseille shirt .

In 1918 Vanco moved to the French capital Paris to study veterinary medicine. At the same time he joined the team from CA Paris , with whom he made it into the national cup final in 1920 . He was called up in the final and was able to win the trophy with his comrades by beating Le Havre AC 2-1 . In 1923 he moved to RC Roubaix, located in the far north of the country, and wore its jersey for five years before giving up football in 1928 at the age of 33. The introduction of professional football in France, which took place in 1932, he missed by four years.

National team

Vanco was 25 years old when he made his debut wearing the jersey of the French national team on March 25, 1920 in a 2-1 win in a friendly against Belgium . From then on he was regularly called up and on May 5, 1921 was involved in a 2-1 win against the English amateur team in the French’s first victory against their rivals from Great Britain. On October 28, 1923, he played his eighth and last international match in a 2-0 defeat against Norway. A goal in the national jersey was denied him.
