Marceli Nowotko

Marceli Nowotko ( pseudonym : Marian ; * August 8, 1893 in Warsaw ; † November 28, 1942 ibid) was a Polish workers' leader.

Nowotko came from a family of farm workers. He was initially a gardener's assistant and later a locksmith in Ciechanów . In 1916 he became a member of the Social Democracy of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania (SDKPiL). From 1916 to 1918 he was a slave laborer in Germany. When the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council was founded in Ciechanów in 1918 , Nowotko played a key role. In the years after 1920 he worked as a secretary in various district committees of the Communist Party of Poland . In 1935 Nowotko was arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison. With the beginning of the Second World War he was able to flee and in January 1942 he led the founding of the Polish Workers' Party , of which he was also the first chairman. Nowotko is considered a co-founder of the Gwardia Ludowa (People's Guard). The Armia Ludowa , the People's Army , emerged from this organization in 1944 . Marceli Nowotko was murdered in 1942 for reasons that are still unknown.
