Marco Casagrande (born May 7, 1971 in Turku , Finland ) is a Finnish architect , writer and professor of architecture. Casagrande was born into a well-off Finnish-Italian family of Catholic faith. He grew up in the Finnish town of Ylitornio in Lapland , which he only left to study. He completed his studies at the Helsinki University of Technology (until 2001).

Mercenary and author

After serving in the Finnish Army in 1993, Casagrande volunteered for the Bosnian-Croatian Defense Forces (HVO). Under the pseudonym Luca Moconesi he wrote his controversially discussed book “Mostarin tien liftarit / Hitchhikers on the road to Mostar (WSOY 1997)” about his experiences in the Bosnian war . Based on the descriptions of war crimes perpetrated by the main character of his autobiographical narrative, he himself came under suspicion of war crimes. In his defense, he later stated that his book was actually a fictional work.

Artist and architect

Marco Casagrande and his partner at the time Sami Rintala were invited to take part in the 2000 Venice Biennale as finalists in the “Emerging Architecture competition (1999)”, announced by the English architecture magazine “Review's”.

The New York Times reporter chose her “60 Minute Man” project as his personal favorite. In this project, Casagrande & Rintala planted an oak forest in an old barge that was filled with composted earth: the amount of earth that the city of Venice produces in human waste in a period of 60 minutes.

Casagrande's multi-layered architectural work includes the field of architecture, urban and environmental planning, art in public spaces, circus art and the arts of other disciplines.

In search of architectures of the unconscious, the truth in reality and the connection between modern man and nature, he believes that man should not be blinded by stress, economic constraints or our unlimited access to entertainment and information on the Internet. What is real is valuable.

Casagrande was appointed professor of ecological urban planning at Tamkang University in Taiwan after he converted an illegal settlement of small urban farmers into an experimental laboratory for ecological urban planning in the "Treasure Hill" project. The reactions from the “Treasure Hill” community were decisive for the entire process.

His theory of the “city of the third generation” perceives the post-industrial urban conditions as an environment destroyed by machines - interpreted by human nature and architects as design shamans merely in the sense of the larger order of collective memory.
