Marco Reda (born June 22, 1977 in Woodbridge ) is a Canadian football player .
Club career
Youth and college
Reda joined the local club Woodbridge SC at the age of six, for which he played until he was 18. He then played for some time with the Malton Bullets, where Paul Stalteri was also playing at the time . 1996 and 1997 Reda played at Winthrop University for the Winthrop Eagles in the NCAA Division I , the highest college league.
First professional years and time in Europe, 1998–2006
After college, he signed a professional contract with the USL A-League club Toronto Lynx in 1998 . While he was only called up five times in his first season, he established himself in the central defense of the lynx in the following seasons and was their captain in 1999. During a friendly game in May 2002 against the German first division club TSV 1860 Munich , which Toronto Lynx surprisingly won 1-0, several European scouts are said to have noticed Reda. In June he completed a trial training session with the Norwegian first division club Sogndal IL and moved to Europe on loan. His performances were convincing enough for a firm commitment and he signed a two-year contract.
His third season in Norway, the 2004 season, did not go particularly well for Sogndal and at the end of the season the club was relegated to the Adeccoligaen . Reda then left the club and signed a one-year contract with the Danish club Aalborg BK in early 2005 . After the engagement with Aalborg he played again in 2006 for a year with Sogndal, but in the 2nd division.
Return to Canada since 2007
Reda, who has both Canadian and Italian citizenship, returned to Canada in 2007 and joined the newly formed major league soccer team Toronto FC . Inconsistent performance and injury problems caused the loss of his regular place in Toronto's defense after just a few games and he was released from his contract at the end of the season. Reda moved to the USL First Division (USL-1) at Charleston Battery in 2008 . With the lower class club he reached the final of the US Open Cup , but lost there to the MLS team DC United with 1: 2. In 2009 he moved within the USL-1 to the Canadian team Vancouver Whitecaps .
National team
Reda was part of Canada's 18-man squad at the Junior World Cup in Malaysia in 1997 , but remained unused during the tournament. In 1999 he played six games for the Canadian Olympic selection at the Pan American Games , but missed a medal as fourth in the final standings. A year later he failed with the team in the qualification for the Olympic football tournament 2000 in Australia, also in this tournament Reda was not used.
In February 2005, the defender made his debut for the Canadian national team in a friendly against Northern Ireland. As a result, he was used in a few other games, but he did not play in a competitive game in his seven international matches.
