Marcus Marius Gratidianus († November 82 BC ) was the nephew of Gaius Marius , a relative of Marcus Tullius Cicero and brother-in-law of Lucius Sergius Catilina .

Life

Marcus Marius Gratidianus was the son of Marcus Gratidius from Arpinum and a sister of Gaius Marius; he himself was adopted by his brother Marcus Marius . 87 BC He began his official career as a tribune under his uncle Marius . As such, he accused Quintus Lutatius Catulus of being a traitor and thus drove him to suicide .

In the years 85 and 84 BC BC Gratidianus held the praetor twice in direct succession and issued an edict that inferior denarii should be checked and withdrawn from circulation. With this he gained great popularity and quasi-divine veneration among the people. Seneca speaks of food and drink offerings on his statues.

During this time there was also a legal dispute between him and a Gaius Sergius Orata about a house sale, which Cicero comments.

83-82 BC BC Gratidianus was possibly as a propaetor in Sicily . In November of the year 82 BC In BC Sulla defeated the followers of Marius in the Battle of the Collinian Gate and was appointed dictator for “legislation and restoration of the state”. On Sulla's orders, Marcus Marius Gratidianus was tortured to death by Catiline at the tomb of Catulus.
