Marcus Nordheim (born September 23, 1812 as Marx Nordheimer in Memmelsdorf in Lower Franconia ; † November 25, 1899 in Hamburg ) was a Jewish merchant.

Life

After learning the butcher's trade in Zeckendorf from the master butcher Salzmann from 1825 to 1827 , he first came to Harsefeld in 1828, to see Mr. Leffmann. Nordheim worked there as a self-employed butcher for Mr. Leffmann, who had permission to run a butcher's shop, but did not use it, for a profit sharing of 50%. Business was so good that after just 9 months he had some savings. In 1829 he went to Altona . First he worked there for a meat dealer. In 1836 he founded his first company in Hamburg , a cattle trade. A short time later, he discovered that the hide and fur business brought in more. From this trade he created a trading company with international renown. Although he was married twice, he remained childless. In the course of his life, Marcus Nordheim set up numerous foundations in the field of poor relief and the school system .

After his death on November 25, 1899, Nordheim's fortune amounted to at least 10 million marks. All nieces and nephews, his staff as well as various charitable and non-profit institutions were given generous bequests . After fulfilling all testament obligations, there remained 1.5 million gold marks. With this sum, the executors set up the Nordheim Foundation .This foundation built the first German maritime hospital on a 35-hectare heather plot in Sahlenburg , which was opened in September 1906. In Hamburg-Ohlsdorf and Sahlenburg a Nordheimstrasse commemorates the merchant.
