Marcus to the lamb

Marcus zum Lamm (* 3. March 1544 in Speyer ; † 16th February 1606 in Heidelberg ) was a German lawyer , Electoral Palatinate Churches and pioneer of Ornithology. His 33-volume illustrated compilation Thesaurus Picturarum (" Treasure of Pictures") describes life in the then electoral residence city of Heidelberg. This chronicle , which even exceeds the Wickiana in size , is an important source for the period of upheaval in the Electoral Palatinate at the end of the 16th century, especially for the religious disputes between Lutherans and Calvinists . It is in the Darmstadt University and State Library as a manuscript in 1971.

From 1564 to 1567 he studied law in Poitiers, where he trained as an ornithologist. 1579 appointed him Count Palatine Johann Kasimir (Palatinate-Simmern) , (1543–1592), as councilor and servant. Volumes 29–31 of his Thesaurus picturarum are dedicated to birds. Since 1577 he has consistently collected data and pictures of around 185 bird species in it, partly from his own observations in the field, partly from bird keeping at the Heidelberger Hof, then dead birds from the market and from the court kitchen. He employed four painters to make watercolors of the birds. This created the first colored bird book from the beginning, a rich source of historical fauna and area dynamics. Through his observations, he registered early on the climate change, which intensified around 1580 and led to the Little Ice Age . This enabled him to advise his sovereign to stock up on food for the population.

Marcus zum Lamm is buried in the choir of the Peterskirche in Heidelberg .
