Life

Mardjan Arvand was born on March 16, 1963 in Mashhad as the daughter of doctor surgeon Khosrow Arvand and doctorate anesthetist Mahereh Sazegari. She graduated from high school in her hometown in 1980 . Until 1982 she took part in a language course at the preparatory colleges in Koblenz and Frankfurt am Main and then studied human medicine at the University of Gießen . Since 1985 she has been a doctoral candidate and research assistant at the University's Institute of Microbiology. She completed her studies in 1988 when she passed her medical examination and two years later gave up the position at the institute to become an assistant doctor at the central hospital on Sankt-Jürgen-Straße in Bremen . This place she held until 1991, where he became this year with the dissertation mechanism of the procoagulant effect of Staphylococcus aureus α-toxin for Doctor of Medicine doctorate .

In the following year Arvand was appointed as a research assistant at the Clinic of the Free University of Berlin . In between, she received her diploma for tropical medicine and parasitology from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in 1993 . Since 1999 she has worked as a specialist in medical microbiology and infection epidemiology. In 2000 she gave up the position at the Free University to work as a research assistant in the Hygiene and Medical Microbiology Department at the Institute for Hygiene at the University of Heidelberg . There she received her habilitation in microbiology and infection immunology in 2002 with the text Investigations on diagnostics, clinics, epidemiology and pathogenesis of Bartonella henselae infections . In the following year she left this university and was appointed professor for molecular bacteriology at the University of Rostock . She taught there until 2008.

During her time in Rostock, Arvand worked as deputy head of the department for medical microbiology and hospital hygiene. She was also a scientific reviewer for several international journals. She is a member of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology, in the specialist groups in infection immunology, microbial systematics, population genetics and infectiology. She is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Society for Rickettsiology.

From 2008 to 2015 Arvand worked at the Hessian State Examination and Investigation Office (HLPUG) in Dillenburg in the hygiene department as a department head.

Arvand has been working at the Robert Koch Institute as head of the applied infection and hospital hygiene department since 2015.
