Maanam is a Polish rock band that worked from 1975 to 2008 and whose roots go back to the Polish hippie movement .

history

The origin of the group's name is not entirely clear. The singer of the band, Olga Jackowska (1951–2018), called "Kora", was of the opinion that it was derived from the old Persian word for "I am". Her husband, however, the band leader Marek Jackowski (1946-2013) said the name came from the abbreviation "MaM" for his duet with Milo Kurtis in 1975.

The band first appeared in 1976 with the line-up "Kora, Jackowski and Kurtis". After Kurtis left for the group "Osjan" he was replaced by John Porter, and the group performed under the name "Maanam Elektryczny Prysznic" (German "Maanam Electric Shower") and played mystical, Eastern-inspired music with a very rocking sound .

In 1979 Porter left the group and founded his own formation, the "Porter Band", and the Jackowskis played their first single together with the group "Dżamble" . The band made their debut at the open-air festival in Lubań , Lower Silesia , and their line-up was Krzysztof and Ryszard Olesiński as well as Ryszard Kupidur.

The first album was recorded in 1980 and released a year later under the name Maanam . The cast also included drummer Paweł Markowski and jazz saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski . Many pieces from these records were successful and the album itself is one of the classics of Polish rock.

A year later the next album was released, O! , on which the jazz trumpeter Tomasz Stańko can also be heard.

In 1983 Night Patrol was published in English and in 1984 the Polish Nocny Patrol . This album is widely considered to be the most outstanding work by Marek Jackowski and Kora. According to many, the mood of the records reflects the atmosphere in Poland at that time. Tadeusz Rolke made the picture for the record cover. Guest musicians were Andrzej Olejniczak (sax / accordeon), Wieslaw Dziedzinski (accordeon), Mieczyslaw Decowski (vibes), Joze Torrez (percussion) and Janusz Grzywacz (keyboards).

In 1989, just before the temporary dissolution of Maanam Sie Ściemnia ( It is getting dark ), recorded. The album was not a commercial success, but it is often considered one of the best of the group, mainly due to its experimental sound. This was also the first time a video of the band was seen on MTV .

In 1991 the group returned with Derwisz i Anioł ( The Dervish and the Angel ). Again Maanam celebrated successes with the resulting titles Wyjątkowo zimny maj ( An extraordinarily cold May ), Anioł ( angel ) and Co znaczą te słowa ( What do these words mean ). The picture on the cover is by Andrzej Świetlik.

At the end of 2008, the "temporary" termed dissolution of the band was announced. The band was not reactivated, however. Marek Jackowski died on May 18, 2013, Kora on July 28, 2018.
