Margaret Paul (* 1939 ) is an American psychologist and psychotherapist who became known for the Inner Child through her work with Erika Chopich . Together with Erika Chopich she developed the therapy method Inner Bonding, which put the knowledge about the inner child into practice. The method is based on an internal dialogue between different parts of the personality , which is either spoken out loud or in writing.

Live and act

Margaret Paul grew up as a child of very young and “emotionally overwhelmed” parents on a farm. She describes her parents as being unable to bond with her in any way as a child . Only her grandfather offered her some support and warmth. She was a "fearful, sickly and nervous" child. As a child, she decided to become a psychotherapist.

She studied psychology and arts education at the University of California, Los Angeles , Azusa Pacific University, and received her PhD in psychology from Ryokan College.

She then completed training as a psychotherapist. She has been treating patients for more than 20 years when she became increasingly dissatisfied with the results of her therapy work. She noticed that her clients were not learning a means to help themselves, but were structurally dependent on the therapy sessions.

At this time she met Erika J. Chopich, with whom she developed the therapy method Inner Bonding together and published several books.

Margaret Paul's work in the field of psychology of personality components continues to be the basis of many other therapeutic and everyday psychological approaches. The Inner Team , a model developed by Friedemann Schulz von Thun , is based in part on these findings. Even Franz Ruppert refers in his psychotraumatological work often on the proposed by Margaret Paul and Erika J. Chopich personality model. This can also be found as a basis in Rolf Arnold's educational works .
