Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize (originally the History of Women in Science Prize) is a scientific award from the History of Science Society (HSS).

The HSS awards the prize in recognition of an outstanding scientific publication on the history of women in science . The award-winning work can deal with the activities of women in science, analyze scientific practices of the past with explicit consideration of the gender category , or examine how women were viewed by scientists. The topic may have been pursued using a biographical, institutional, theoretical, or other approach. The sciences relevant for the prize are medicine , engineering , social sciences and natural sciences . The award is endowed with $ 500.

history

The prize was launched in 1987 under the name History of Women in Science Prize . The HSS (now Women's Caucus) Committee on Women, founded in 1972, proposed the award and raised $ 4,000 in donations. However, it took several years to secure permanent funding for the award.

In 2004, the award was renamed in recognition of the services of science historian Margaret W. Rossiter . For one thing, she had worked with remarkable success as editor of the HSS magazine, Isis , for ten years . On the other hand, the “unique” contributions of Rossiter to the history of science should be honored in this way. Rossiter is a pioneer in the field of the role of women in science. In 1997 she was awarded the prize herself.

Procurement guidelines

The prize is awarded alternately to a monograph (in uneven years) or to an article published in a magazine or in an anthology (in even years). The award-winning work must have been published in the four calendar years prior to the year of the award. For the year awarded in 1987, publications from 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 could be considered. A division of the award into two works is not planned. The number of authors of the publication is limited to two.
