Margarete Hahn

Margarete Hahn (born November 5, 1898 in Potschappel , † August 19, 1981 in Dresden ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SED ).

Life

Margarete Hahn grew up in a social democratic working class family of nine in Saxony. After elementary school she began training as a straw hat seamstress , which she broke off. She was employed as an unskilled seamstress. At the age of 16 she joined the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) and became the chairwoman of the Dresden local group. In 1917 she was arrested for distributing the SAJ magazine Stürmer on the International Youth Convention and was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

After her release in 1918, she joined the SPD . There she was on the Federal Women's Committee. From 1921 she became a member of the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB). As a union, it was first organized in the factory workers 'association , then in the hat workers' association . There she was on the local executive committee from 1930 until the ban in 1933.

At the beginning of the Third Reich she was known as an opponent of National Socialism . In addition to a house search by the SA in 1933, she remained largely inconspicuous and worked as a straw hat seamstress in Dresden. It was not until the end of the Second World War that she became involved in humanitarian aid for Soviet prisoners of war .

After the war she first joined the SPD and became a member of the SED after the forced unification of the KPD and SPD . As a union, she was involved in the IG textiles, clothing, leather (IGTBL). There she was first chairman from 1946 to 1949 and first chairwoman of the state executive from 1950 to 1952. From 1952 to 1963 she was district chairman in Dresden. As an FDGB and SED member, she sat in the Saxon state parliament from 1948 to 1958 and later in the Dresden district council .
