Life

Margarete Hoffmann comes from a working-class family. In 1930 she joined the Communist Youth Association of Germany and in 1945 became a member of the Communist Party of Germany ( SED from 1946 ).

After the Second World War, Margarete Hoffmann worked as an editor in the editorial office of the SED organ New Germany . In 1949 she was commissioned to set up an archive for the federal board of the Democratic Women's Association of Germany (DFD), which she also managed with a lot of initiative.

Due to her successful work as an archivist, she was brought in 1953 to the Institute for Marxism-Leninism, founded in 1949 at the Central Committee of the SED , in order to take an active part in the development of the Central Party Archive. In doing so, she achieved particular merits by cataloging the older historical documents of the KPD from the years before 1945.

In the Federal Archives are still used today research tools that have been created by Margaret Hoffmann.
