Margarete von Kunheim , née Margarete Luther (born December 17, 1534 in Wittenberg , † 1570 in Mohrungen , Duchy of Prussia ) was the youngest daughter of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora . With her husband, she founded an extensive family with today's descendants .

Life

Georg von Kunheim the Elder Ä. (1480–1543), governor of Tapiau , advised Margrave Albrecht of Prussia and encouraged the country to convert to Lutheranism . Duke Albrecht took care of the education of the underage son Georg von Kunheim the Elder. J. (1532-1611). With a recommendation to Philipp Melanchthon , he sent him in 1550 to study law at the University of Wittenberg . There he met Margarete Luther . After the death of her mother, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther grew up with her guardian Philipp Melanchthon.

Georg von Kunheim the Elder J. and Margarete became engaged in 1554 and married on August 5, 1555; Georg's guardians refused to consent to the marriage. For her and Duke Albrecht it was not befitting. The couple had four sons and five daughters, of whom only Margarete (1559–1592), Volmar (* 1564) and Anne survived. Melanchthon was able to change the Duke's mind. After 15 happy years of marriage, she died at the age of 36. She rests with five of her children in the crypt of the village church in Mühlhausen .

Margarete's birth is said to have inspired Luther to the Christmas carol From Heaven Up Here I Come .
