Margo (actress)
Margo Albert , stage name Margo (born May 10, 1917 in Mexico City as María Marguerita Guadalupe Teresa Estela Bolado Castilla y O'Donnell , † July 17, 1985 in Pacific Palisades , California ) was a Mexican - American actress and dancer .
life and career
Margo was born in Mexico City as the daughter of a Spanish surgeon, her uncle was the famous composer and orchestra leader Xavier Cugat . From the age of nine she appeared regularly in her uncle's orchestra, later she was successful as a dancer in hotels and nightclubs. At the age of 15 she was discovered during a dance by renowned Hollywood screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur . Margo was brought to Hollywood and made a major role in Crimes Without a Passion (1934) in the role of Claude Rains' former mistressher film debut - although Rains was almost three times her age at the time. In the following years Margo played mostly young girls with tragic fates. In addition to Burgess Meredith , she was in the role of Miriamne in the crime film Winterset (1936), a role that she had already played in the theater. In 1937 she played in Frank Capra's classic film In the Fetters of Shangri-La, a young girl who leaves her enchanted hometown of Shangri-La and dies as a result. After a few appearances on Broadway in the late 1930s, Margo took on the female lead in the B-movie The Leopard Man in 1943 .
In the period that followed, she received only sparse film offers, especially since she and her husband Eddie Albert were politically left-wing and, among other things, had contacts with communists. Therefore, during the McCarthy era in the 1950s , Margo was temporarily on one of the black lists and could hardly find any engagements. After all, she played a supporting role in Elia Kazan's drama Viva Zapata in 1952 ! about the revolutionary Emiliano Zapata , embodied by Marlon Brando . After a few television appearances, Margo retired from the acting business in 1965. Margo was married twice: from 1937 until the divorce in 1940 with the Austrian-American actor Francis Lederer , then from 1945 until her death with the actor Eddie Albert. She and Eddie Albert had two children, including actor Edward Albert . After the end of her film career, Margo was also politically active, so she was appointed Commissioner for Social Services in Los Angeles in 1974. She died of a brain tumor in 1985 at the age of 68.
