Margrét Jónsdóttir (* 1893 on the farm Árbær í Holtum, Iceland ; † 1971 in Reykjavík , Iceland) was an Icelandic writer .

Life

The writer Margrét Jónsdóttir was born in 1893 on the farm Árbær í Holtum in southern Iceland not far from the Árbæjarfoss waterfall in the Ytri-Rangá river . Her mother was Stefanía Jónsdóttir from the Skjalþingsstadir farm in Vopnafjörður , her father Jón Gunnlaugur Sigurðsson, who was then the parish clerk in Rangárþing .

The girl grew up with her mother, who worked on various farms in southern Iceland. Margrét attended the Kvennaskóli (women's school) in Reykjavík from 1910 to 1912 . She later went to the teacher training college and graduated in 1926. Then she also studied in Denmark and Sweden. In addition, from 1912 to 1918 she had worked as a private tutor for various families on Reykjanesskagi and in the area of Borgarfjörður , West Iceland, and later also in Reykjavík as a secretary and clerk. After her final exam she worked as a teacher in Reykjavík, and from 1944 as a museum attendant at the National Museum . From 1959 she was a housewife in Reykjavík. She actively participated in social life, advocated child protection and for teachers and trade unions.

She published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines.

She died in Reykjavík in 1971 at the age of 78.

Margrét Jónsdóttir wrote articles and poems from an early age. She gave z. B. the children's newspaper Æskan out (1928–1942), for which she also wrote many texts. She wrote numerous literary texts, poems, songs and plays for children. She also translated numerous children's books.

But she also wrote poetry for adults over and over again. Her first volume of poetry Við fjöll og sæ appeared in 1915. Several other volumes of poetry followed.

Her probably best-known poem is Ísland er land þitt , which is also very popular as a song .
