History of the construction

Since the conquest of Serbia by the Ottomans in 1459, until 1830, there was not a single Orthodox church in Zaječar due to the centuries of Ottoman rule . Not until 1830 was a small church built with the permission of the Ottoman officer Ferad-Age , which was only equipped with the bare essentials for an Orthodox service. During a visit to the city in the summer of 1833, Prince Miloš Obrenović noted with regret that the religious-Orthodox life in Zaječar had been neglected. Knowing the important role and importance of the Orthodox Church in this part of Serbia, the prince ordered the establishment of a new Timok eparchy and the construction of a cathedral in Zaječar.

Construction of the cathedral

Construction of the Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin Mary began in the spring of 1834, with the support of Prince Miloš Obrenović, who instructed the state authorities to create all the conditions for the immediate construction of the cathedral (people, materials, etc.), which the state authorities quickly did fulfilled. The cathedral was completed as early as October 1834. The cathedral was inaugurated on December 23rd. In later times the cathedral was renovated and redesigned several times. A high church tower was also built, but not attached to the cathedral, but almost directly next to it. In the church tower there are five bells that were cast in Kragujevac in 1899.
