The Roman Catholic branch church of the Assumption of Mary is a Gothic hall church in the Kirchhof district of Petting in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein . It belongs to the parish association of St. Michael Kirchanschöring in the dean's office in Traunstein in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . Apart from the valuable murals in the choir, which among the earliest in Rupertiwinkel counts, the church contains valuable works of the yet unexplored fire Hofener sculptor Martin Plasisganik.

History and architecture

As early as the 14th century, the St. Christoph farm belonged to the Lords of Eichheim and was acquired by the Salzburg archbishops. The courtyard, known as the “curia ad sanctum Christoforum”, contained a church or chapel that already existed at that time and was consecrated to St. Christopher as the predecessor of today's church. The patronage changed with the new building. The church used to be the destination of a pilgrimage to Mary . With the new building made of tuff ashlars , a four-bay, single-nave hall church with a three-sided end was built around 1420. Instead of a tower, there is a roof turret. The interior is closed off by a deep mesh vault over wall templates and services with profiled capitals. The keystones in the apex of the yokes are provided with depictions of Mary with child, the face of Christ and an unspecified coat of arms. On the south-east side of the choir there is a fresco from the time the church was built with a depiction of Our Lady between Saints Maria Magdalena and Elisabeth of Thuringia . An Augustinian canon with tape is shown kneeling in front of Elisabeth as the donor. The fresco is close to the Soft Style in terms of design and expressiveness and resembles the style of the depiction of Elisabeth on an altar in the Streichenkirche , dated around 1410 and by an unknown Salzburg master.

Furnishing

The furnishings date from the second half of the 18th century and were mainly created by Martin Plasisganik. The high altar from the years 1740/1750 with an elaborate canopy retable and lateral double-column designed, similar to the high altar in the church in Weildorf . In the shrine there is a carved figure of Our Lady from around 1640/1650, flanked by Saints Catherine and Barbara . The image of grace is framed by a halo, above which hovering angels hold a small canopy. Kneeling angels and carved flower vases, so-called May jugs, are arranged on the cornice on both sides. In the altar extract , God the Father is shown as a full figure on clouds in a halo, with a dove of the Holy Spirit above it. In front of the high altar is a red marble tombstone for the licentiate Stephan Hueber from 1648, who died in the chaos of war.

The left side altar from before 1758 has a simpler construction, but is also richly decorated. The middle picture shows the Annunciation and was possibly created by Johann Georg Weibhauser around 1850/1860 . Above it is a carved inscription cartouche, on both sides narrow pilasters with volute capitals, in front of them the figures of Saints Rochus and Sebastian. The entablature is provided with a saddlecloth border , a curved attachment with Christ's monogram in a wreath of clouds with small putti heads above it, and is surrounded by rays and lined with garlands of flowers. On each side there is a richly carved flower vase.

The right side altar in the strict forms of the Salzburg early baroque in black and gold comes from 1611. It is structured by decorated columns that rest on volute consoles. The altarpiece shows the crucifixion of Christ from around 1850/1860 like the painting on the left side altar. The Rococo essay was created by Plasisganik before 1758th The copy of the miraculous image of Maria Kirchenthal stands in a frame curved inwards on three sides and is surrounded by a halo with four putti heads; a kneeling angel can be seen on the outside of the entablature.

The pulpit on the north wall is decorated with sculptures and ornaments by Plasisganik and was created and framed by Waginger craftsmen. It is marbled and provided with gilded decoration and shows in the middle of the pulpit a gilded relief with a representation of the teaching church in the form of the Pope with a chalice and the symbols of the evangelists . On the side of the pulpit parapet there is an angel with a cross, which is supposed to remind the preacher of his duty to preach the crucified Christ. On the back wall of the pulpit is a bas-relief with Christ blessing and the globe. The curved sound cover with front cartridge is provided with four putti, two of which hold coats of arms on the cornice; in the middle is an angel with the cross. The underside of the sound cover shows the dove of the Holy Spirit.

In the nave there are wooden figures of Saints Joseph and James , which once stood at the side of the high altar. A resurrection Christ from the beginning of the 16th century is kept. In the west there is a gallery on two wooden pillars with parapets.
