The Maria-Hilf-Basilika ( Spanish Basílica María Auxiliadora ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Almagro district of Buenos Aires , Argentina . The Church of the Carlos Borromeo parish of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires is cared for by the Salesians and, as is common among them , is dedicated to Mary, the Help of Christians . The church, completed in 1910, bears the title of a minor basilica and is the baptistery of Pope Francis .

history

The church of the new parish of San Carlos de Almagro was built in 1872 on an area donated by the Estebarena brothers. After other orders had canceled, Salesians took over the church planting in 1878. Because of the strong growth of the community of San Carlos, the foundation stone was laid for the new parish church Maria Hilf in June 1900, led by the Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca and Teodolinda Fernández de Alvear, one of the benefactors.

The architect Ernesto Vespignani, brother of the pastor Joseph Vespignani, who traveled from Turin, designed the church in neo-Romanesque style. The church was consecrated on the feast of Mary Help of Christians in May 1910, the 100th anniversary of the May Revolution . It was received in 1941 by Pope Pius XII. awarded the rank of minor basilica. In 2006, the temple was declared a City of Buenos Aires Historical and Cultural Interest .

architecture

The three-aisled basilica was built in the neo-Romanesque style. It is designed with a transept on a rectangular floor plan with 1,800 square meters. A dome with an eight-sided drum opens above the chancel, and a 5-meter-high statue of Mary Help of Christians, who was blessed on May 18, 1906, rises on the 45-meter-high lantern . The dome that covers the presbytery has an octagonal circumference and ends in a vault 45 meters above the ground.

The richly ornamented entrance facade is divided into three parts with pilasters, which correspond to the nave. They each have a high window and an entrance, the middle portal is highlighted with a risalit , enthroned on a pantocrator . In the middle of the facade rises the 50 meter high church tower.

In addition to the ground floor area for parishioners, the church has upper galleries for the students of the Pius School. Below is a crypt .

Sanctuary

The richly decorated interior is predominantly designed in red and gold tones, the vaults are designed in star blue. The 15-meter-high columns are designed with parallel stripes in beige and brick red to subdivide the nave. A pantocrator dominates the apse vault above the main altar of the temple. The windows are made with stained glass. Many pieces of equipment such as the holy water stoup and marble as building material were delivered from Italy. The high altar made of beige marble is roofed with a canopy, which is supported by four cylindrical columns made of polished granite. Under the altar table is a bas-relief by the Turin sculptor Pasquale Sassi depicting purgatory.

The organ was built in 1911 by Carlos Vegezzi Bossi. In 1990 it was renovated and electrified by Amadini-Weinhold. 38 registers are played via its three manuals.

Personalities

In 1933 Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, was baptized by the Salesian father Enrique Pozzoli in the Church of Maria Hilf. The tango musician Carlos Gardel and the beatified Salesian Zefyrinus Namuncurá also emerged from the church .
