Zefyrinus Namuncurá

Zefyrinus (Ceferino) Namuncurá (born August 26, 1886 in Chimpay , Argentina , † May 11, 1905 in Rome ) is a blessed of the Don Bosco family . The young layman of indigenous ( Mapuche ) origin was beatified on November 11, 2007 in his birthplace Chimpay .

Life

Ceferino Namuncurá was the son of the Mapuche chief Manuel Namuncurá, a soldier. He was baptized by a Salesian missionary and grew up on the banks of the Río Negro . At the age of 11 he came to Buenos Aires , where he was to follow in his father's footsteps. At the age of 16, however, he joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco , he wanted to become a priest. His great role model was Dominikus Savio , and he also managed to become a little like him: in piety, charity, everyday obligations and religious exercises. Gradually he became a model himself and his friends took the things he said very seriously. He taught her poise and temperance.

In 1903 he met Cardinal Johannes Cagliero , who took him to Italy, where he continued his studies. It was also hoped that the change in climate would have a positive effect on the tuberculosis-stricken health of the young man. He was taken to hospital on March 28, 1905, but it was too late: he passed away peacefully on May 11.

Adoration and Beatification

His body was transferred to his homeland in 1924 and buried in Fortín Mercedes . Numerous pilgrims come there to this day to ask for his intercession.

On May 2, 1944, the process of canonization was initiated; since June 22, 1972, the Roman Catholic Church has considered it to be worthy of worship , and since November 11, 2007, as blessed.
