Giovanni Cardinal Cagliero SDB (born January 11, 1838 in Castelnuovo d'Asti , Asti Province , Kingdom of Sardinia , † February 28, 1926 in Rome ) was an Italian religious priest and Vatican diplomat .

Life

Giovanni Cagliero kicked his school years in the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco and studied in Turin trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He was dressed personally by Johannes Bosco . Michael Rua and Dominikus Savio were among his fellow students . Giovanni Cagliero received on 14 June 1862, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then belonged to the teaching staff of the Salesian Study Center in Turin. In the years 1875 to 1877 he led the first Salesians to America , from 1877 to 1884 he was the spiritual rector of his order.

In 1884 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Magydus and apostolic vicar of the new vicariate Northern Patagonia in Argentina . He was ordained bishop on December 7, 1884 in Turin by Cardinal Gaetano Alimonda , Archbishop of Turin , co- consecrators were Emiliano Manacorda , Bishop of Fossano , and Giovanni Battista Bertagna , Auxiliary Bishop in Turin. Giovanni Cagliero made an apostolic visitation in 1904 to the Italian dioceses of Bobbio , Piacenza, Savona and Tortona . In 1908 Pope Pius X appointed him Titular Archbishop of Sebastea and Apostolic Delegate for Nicaragua and Costa Rica . In 1915 Pope Benedict XV took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bernardo all Terme in the college of cardinals . In 1920, at the age of 82, he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati .

Giovanni Cagliero died on February 28, 1926 in Rome and was initially buried there. In 1964 his bones were transferred to the Cathedral of Viedma in Argentina.
