Maria-Hilf-Chapel, Wernau

The Maria-Hilf-Kapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in the city of Wernau .

history

Residents of Steinbach, which was dissolved in today's city of Wernau in 1938, asked St. Mary to be spared from a wave of plague and built the small chapel in this context. Felling dates for the wood used indicate that it was built around 1667, making the chapel the oldest building in the city of Wernau that still exists today. The chapel was consecrated in 1724. Anselma Bopp , the founder of the order of the Thuiner Franciscan Sisters , prepared for her monastery life here around 1850. Today services are held in the chapel , especially on the Assumption of Mary .

Architecture and surroundings

The chapel is a single-nave aisle church that was built in the Gothic style . Above the entrance door in the west rises the bell tower with a pointed helmet made of sheet copper, in which there is a single bell. In front of the west side of the chapel is a herb garden with thyme , rosemary , dill and lavender . On the east side of the chapel, a war memorial with a pietà was erected in memory of the townspeople who died in the First World War. A crucifixion group from the 16th century, which was originally on the chapel's cemetery wall, is now attached to the steeple of the neighboring church of St. Magnus to save it from deterioration.

Interior

There is a small holy water font at the entrance . The walls of the chapel are adorned with carved wooden figures, including figures of St. Sebastian and St. Rochus as patron saints against the plague and St. Nepomuk as patron saint against the flooding of the nearby Steinbach. There is a painting on the chapel's wooden, neo-Gothic Marian altar that shows the Adoration of the Shepherds . As it turned out during renovation work, there are remains of paintings from the 18th century under the plaster of the side walls.
