Adam Okruashvili

Adam Okruashvili (born January 1, 1989 ) is a Georgian judoka . In 2015 he was third in the world championship and European champion. In 2013, 2014 and 2017 he was runner-up in the European Championship.

Athletic career

Adam Okruashvili fights in the heavyweight division, the weight class over 100 kilograms. In 2011 and 2014 he was Georgian champion in this weight class.

Okruashvili was second in the 2004 European Cadet Championships and third in the 2005 European Junior Championships. In 2007, he won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Bangkok . In 2009 the European Championships took place in Tbilisi . Okruashvili finished in seventh place after losing to Dutchman Grim Vuijsters in the quarterfinals . At the 2010 World Championships , Okruashvili retired early in the heavyweight division against the German Andreas Tölzer and in the open class against the Japanese Keiji Suzuki . The following year he reached the heavyweight round of 16 at the 2011 World Championships and was then defeated by the South Korean Kim Sung-min . At the European Championships in 2012 he was defeated in the quarterfinals to the Lithuanian Marius Paškevičius and in the battle for a bronze medal to the Poland Janusz Wojnarowicz . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London he was eliminated in the first round against Andreas Tölzer.

In 2013 Okruashvili reached the final at the European Championships in Budapest with a victory over the Slovenian Matjaž Ceraj , where the 1.89 m tall Georgian was defeated by the 2.03 m tall French Teddy Riner . Okruashvili and Riner met in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro and the French won again. Okruashvili finished fifth after losing the battle for bronze to Tunisian Faicel Jaballah . In 2014, the Georgian reached the final at the European Championships in Montpellier with a semi-final victory over the German André Breitbarth and, as in the previous year, won silver behind Teddy Riner. At the 2014 World Championships , Okruashvili was eliminated in the round of 16 against Roy Meyer from the Netherlands . In 2015, the European Championships took place as part of the 2015 European Games held in Baku . Okruashvili defeated his compatriot Levani Matiaschwili in the quarterfinals and the Lithuanian Marius Paškevičius in the semifinals. He won the title against the Israeli Or Sasson . At the World Championships in Astana he defeated the German Sven Heinle in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to the Japanese Ryu Shichinohe . In the battle for bronze he defeated the second German André Breitbarth. At the 2016 European Championships, he lost to the Ukrainian Oleksander Hordiienko in the round of 16 . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he lost his opening match like four years before, this time against the Japanese Hisayoshi Harasawa .

In 2017 Okruaschwili reached the final at the European Championships in Warsaw with a victory over Maciej Sarnacki from Poland . In a purely Georgian final, he lost to Guram Tuschishvili, who was six years his junior . At the 2017 World Championships , Okruashvili finished seventh after a quarter-final defeat by Barna Bor from Hungary . In 2018 and 2019, Okruashvili did not take part in international championships, but fought in Grand Prix tournaments.
