Just days before his 26th birthday, Or Sasson won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics in August 2016. The behavior of his Egyptian opponent in the opening fight attracted worldwide attention: Islam El Shehaby refused Sasson the handshake that is usual in judo after a fight. Ofir Gendelman, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , described the incident as "shocking" and "against the spirit of Rio 2016".
