Maria (heraldry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Virgin Mary appears in heraldry as a common figure in various representations in coats of arms . It is often shown in the shield and less in the coat of arms .

Mary can be represented standing with the baby Jesus in her right or left arm or sitting on a throne with the child on her lap. The representation as a virgin and in other postures such as kneeling or praying occurs. Mary herself appears in the coat of arms crowned and with a halo , with a wrinkled robe and loose hair. Often one of the Marian attributes , such as roses or lilies, appears in addition to or instead of a figurative representation .

The diverse representation in the coat of arms can be adequately described in the blazon , as not all features always apply. Even the color of the clothes can be blue, red, gold or silver. Mary is also represented as a crescent Madonna in coats of arms .
