Maria Amalia had poor health and died at the age of 21, unmarried, in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira . Her cousin Ferdinand Maximilian was as good as engaged to her. The emperor had just given his consent to marriage when Maria Amalia died of pulmonary tuberculosis . Ferdinand Maximilian always carried a ring with him that was made from her hair.
