Maria Anna Brunner (born October 15, 1655 in Glarus ; † October 28, 1697 in Hermetschwil ) was a Swiss Benedictine nun and from 1688 to 1697 abbess of the Hermetschwil monastery .

Maria Anna Brunner came from a Glarus councilor family. In 1674 she made her profession , in 1688 she was elected Abbess of Hermetschwil. Mother Maria Anna wanted to run the abbey autonomously and therefore repeatedly messed with the abbot of Muri . Her successes proved her right: She improved the management of the abbey's property to such an extent that, despite the complete renovation of the monastery buildings, she was able to generate a financial profit and increase the monastery’s assets. Another merit of Mother Maria Anna was the reorganization of the monastic archive .

Mother Maria Anna Brunner's achievements were preserved in four books in which she described the history of the monastery and in particular its legal position vis-à-vis Muri monastery .
