history

Born in Ireland, Maria Anna von Ertl (born Freiin O'Malley, verballhornt to d'Omolley in Vienna, 1728–1801), widow of court attorney Johann Nepomuk Edler von Ertl, bequeathed everything in her will of April 12, 1801 Assets of a foundation to be set up for prospective lawyers in Vienna. In carrying out this testamentary provision, the law faculty of the University of Vienna then arranged for this foundation, which bears the name of the founder, to be set up.

The foundation letter was approved by the Lower Austrian provincial government with a decision of March 16, 1844, No. 16.058. Any provision of this pen letter was amended by Decree of the Ministry of the Interior of 21 October 1867 Nr.17.190, and the addendum to Maria Anna of Ertl'schen pen letter dated October 27, 1887 and supplemented and the imperial governor's office by decree of 8 November 1887, number 60,883.

Due to the law of 17 May 1938, the reconciliation and integration of societies, organizations and associations (Journal of Laws for the country Austria Nr. 136/1938) was the Reich Commissioner for the reunification of Austria with the German Reich decreed that the National Socialist Rechtswahrerbund the To manage the foundation. A so-called build-up levy of RM 100,213.49 had to be paid to the standstill commissioner . After another amendment, the foundation letter was changed by resolution of the state government of May 16, 1972, Pr.Z. 1350, approved. With regard to the passage of time and the changed economic circumstances, the letter of the foundation will be revised, subject to the approval of the foundation authority.

In 1894, the Ertlgasse in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st district) was named after the founder; previously the street was called Mariengasse from 1844-1894 after her first name.

The foundation building

Maria Anna von Ertl had decreed that the meat banks and houses adjoining her house should be bought and a new building should be built there, from the rental income of which grants can be awarded. In 1817 the Ertl'sches Stiftungshaus at Rotenturmstrasse  13 was completed and handed over to the administrators of the foundation - for the attention of the respective dean of the law faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1838/39 the Ertl'sche Stiftungshaus was rebuilt by Joseph Kornhäusel and again replaced by a new building in 1914. The Vienna Bar Association has had its seat here since 1853 .

On March 15, 1945, the foundation building was badly damaged by a bomb. The events of the war also meant that assets, insofar as they consisted of cash and imperial bonds, were devalued.

A restoration of the building was made from the foundation's income in the years 1945 to 1955. On the basis of the Vienna Foundation and Fund Reorganization Act of October 21, 1955 (Provincial Law Gazette for Vienna No. 19/1955), the original provisions of the letter of foundation that corresponded to the wishes of the founder were restored.
