Maria Athanasopoulou

Maria Athanasopoulou ( Greek Μαρία Αθανασοπούλου , * in Athens ) is a Greek neo- Graecist .

Athanassopoulou completed her studies in Modern Greek Philology at the University of Crete in 1989 and then studied Comparative Literature and Neo- Greek Studies at the Universities of London and Cambridge . She received her PhD in Cambridge in 1999 with a dissertation on the Greek sonnet . After teaching at the universities of Thessaly , Crete, Cyprus and Patras , she has been a lecturer in modern Greek literature and literary theory at the Institute for Theater Studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki since 2009 .

Research focuses on Greek prose and poetry over the past two centuries, the relationship between literature and national identity, and the theory of literary forms.
