Gottlieb Friedrich von Weitbrecht (born June 4, 1840 in Calw ; † May 31, 1911 in Stuttgart ) was a German Lutheran theologian and general superintendent in Ulm .

Live and act

The son of the bookseller Gottlieb Weitbrecht (1804–1879) and Sabine Sibylle Gruner (1812–1859), after attending the Latin school in Calw, first studied at the theological seminar in Urach and from 1854, belonging to the Weitbrecht family of theologians and publishers , which is widespread in Württemberg from 1858 with Johann Tobias Beck at the University of Tübingen . In 1862 he was taken on as a repetitionist at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen , before he was appointed as a religion teacher at the Evangelical Daughter Institute in Stuttgart in 1867 .

Two years later, Weitbrecht also took on the duties of the youth priest at the Stuttgart Hospital Church . In 1874 he was transferred to both the Garrison Church and the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium Stuttgart for personnel reasons , but returned to the Hospital Church in 1885. Here he was first appointed as the second parish priest and a year later promoted to city ​​dean and in 1897 appointed prelate and general superintendent of Ulm. The general superintendents of the Protestant regional church were, by virtue of their office, privileged members of the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament . That is why Gottlieb Friedrich von Weitbrecht joined the state parliament in 1897 after his appointment in Ulm. He held the office until 1900. In 1900 he was appointed preacher of Stuttgart.

In addition to his professional obligations, Weitbrecht had been part of the editorial team of the “Christenbotens”, the oldest German Sunday paper, and from 1892 to 1902 also the editorial team of the “Jugendblätter”, both published by the Stuttgart publishing house JF Steinkopf , where his brother Conrad Christian Weitbrecht (1847 –1893) was a partner at the time. In addition, Weitbrecht wrote several biographies, stories and books for young people as well as summaries of numerous sermons.

Gottlieb Friedrich von Weitbrecht was married to Lydia Roser (1846-1896), with whom he had five sons and four daughters.

Honors

  • In 1899 Gottlieb Friedrich von Weitbrecht was raised to the rank of personal nobility by being awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown .
  • In 1908 he was made an honorary doctor of theology from the University of Tübingen.
