María Barrientos , in Catalan Maria Barrientos i Llopis (born March 4, 1884 in Barcelona , † August 8, 1946 in Ciboure ) was a Spanish opera singer ( coloratura soprano ).

Barrientos composed a symphony during her training at the Barcelona Conservatory when she was twelve and conducted an orchestra in the same year. After a short vocal training with Francisco Bonet , she made her debut at the age of fourteen in La sonnambula at the Teatro Lírico in Barcelona. In the next period she had several leading roles at the Teatro de Novidades . She made her debut at Covent Garden Opera in 1903 and at La Scala in Milan the following year .

In the following years she performed at many important opera houses around the world. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Lucia di Lammermoor in 1916 , where she performed regularly for the next four years. In later years she was a recognized interpreter of Spanish and French songs. With Manuel de Falla on the piano she recorded his Siete Canciones Populares Espanoles and Soneto a Córdoba . Around 1924 she withdrew from the opera stage and only appeared in recitals .
