Maria Berns

Maria Berns (born December 24, 1899 in Essen , † March 4, 1981 ) was a German social democratic politician.

Life

Berns took up a commercial profession after primary school. Among other things, she worked as an office clerk and travel agent.

Since 1919 she was a member of the SPD. In Essen she was active in both the party and the workers' welfare. Berns lived in Chemnitz between 1929 and 1933 . There she was also a member of the city council from 1931 to 1933.

During the time of National Socialism took part in the resistance.

In 1946 she was one of the re-founders of the SPD in Essen, she was a member of the board and women’s leader. Berns had also been a member of the appointed city council in Essen since 1946.

From the first to the fourth electoral term, Berns was directly elected MP for an Essen constituency in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . In the fifth legislative period, it moved into the state parliament via the state list . Overall, Berns was a member of parliament from 1947 to 1966.
