Maria Buchinger

Maria Buchinger (born May 21, 1916 in Flensburg , † March 12, 2010 in Marbella , Spain ) was also known as the "grande dame of fasting". Together with her husband, Helmut Wilhelmi, she opened the Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic in Marbella in 1973.

Life

Maria Buchinger was the daughter of the founder of Buchinger therapeutic fasting, Otto Buchinger , who worked as a doctor in the Imperial Navy . He fell ill with tonsillitis and contracted a rheumatic disease towards the end of the First World War , which is why he had to give up his service.

He then underwent a three-week fast on the advice of a fellow Marine , with the result that his health was completely restored. Otto Buchinger devoted himself to the development of therapeutic fasting.

The family was increasingly discriminated against, both because of Buchinger's medical and political orientation and because of the Jewish origins of Else Buchinger's father, Maria's mother.

Maria's upbringing was spartan and close to nature. She was impressed by her father's teachings and became his assistant in 1938.

In 1943 she married Helmut Wilhelmi. After the end of the Second World War , the couple founded the Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic in Überlingen in 1953 together with Otto Buchinger ; Another clinic in Marbella followed in 1973 . At that time the fasting method was still unknown in Spain .

1995 she was awarded the German Federal Government , the Federal Cross of Merit . In 2004 she was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Marbella Business Association. In 2008, the local Rotary Club honored her performance with a medal .
