Maria Dorothea Sophia von Oettingen (1639–1698)

Maria Dorothea Sophia zu Oettingen-Oettingen (born December 29, 1639 in Oettingen ; † June 29, 1698 in Nürtingen ) was the second wife of Duke Eberhard III. von Württemberg (1614–1674).

She was born as the fifth child of Count Joachim Ernst zu Oettingen-Oettingen (1612-1659) from the Protestant branch of the House of Oettingen and the third child of his second wife, Countess Anna Dorothea zu Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Gleichen (1621-1643).

On July 20, 1656 she married Duke Eberhard III in Ansbach at the age of sixteen, after his first wife Anna Katharina Dorothea von Salm-Kyrburg died on June 7, 1655.

This second marriage by Eberhard resulted in the following children:

  • Johann Friedrich (born June 10, 1669 - † October 15, 1693), died after a duel in Herrenberg .
  • Sophie Charlotte (born February 22, 1671; † September 19, 1717), married to Duke Johann Georg II of Saxony-Eisenach (1665–1698)
  • Eberhard (* / † 1672)
  • Emanuel Eberhard (October 11, 1674 - July 1, 1675)

All of their children died childless.

In return, her older brother, Count Albrecht Ernst I. zu Oettingen-Oettingen (1642–1683), married two daughters of Duke Eberhard from his first marriage: on June 7, 1665 in Stuttgart, Princess Christine Friederike von Württemberg (1644–1674) and on June 30, 1665 April 1682 in Oettingen Eberhardine Katharine von Württemberg (1651–1683), whereby both became stepdaughter and sister-in-law of Maria Dorothea.

After the death of her husband, she lived between 1675 and 1690 in Kirchheim Castle , one of the traditional widows' houses of the Württemberg people . After the great fire in Kirchheim on August 3, 1690, Nürtingen Castle was assigned to her as a widow's seat.
