Maria Elisabeth in Bavaria
Maria Elisabeth Amalie Franziska in Bavaria (* May 5, 1784 in Landshut ; † June 1, 1849 in Paris ) was a duchess in Bavaria and by marriage Princess of Wagram and Duchess of Neuchâtel .
Life
Maria Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Wilhelm in Bavaria (1752–1837) from his marriage to Maria Anna (1753–1824), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Friedrich Michael von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld and sister of the future King of Bavaria Maximilian I Joseph . For a short time, Maria Elisabeth was discussed as the bride of Emperor Franz II .
She married on March 9, 1808 the French Marshal Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), Prince of Wagram and Duke of Neuchâtel. The wedding was at the express request Emperor Napoleon I come to pass. King Maximilian Joseph assigned the couple the New Residence in Bamberg for their court keeping. After the fall of Napoleon, the couple lost the sovereign Principality of Neuchâtel, but retained all other dignities. On June 1, 1815, Maria Elisabeth's husband fell from a window on the 2nd floor of the imperial apartments of the former prince-bishop's residence about 20 meters down the Residenzstrasse and died ("Bamberg Lintel"). There is a plaque in his memory there. Berthier's end may just as well have been an accident or suicide. Berthier is rumored to have been killed by six masked men who threw him out.
