Maria Eugénia Rodrigues Branco (born April 1, 1927 in Lisbon , † August 25, 2016 in Lisbon) was a Portuguese actress .

Life

Her father was a professional musician with the orchestra of the national radio company Emissora Nacional , where her sister also sang. On the advice of a friend of the family, the composer and conductor Jaime Mendes , who worked regularly for Portuguese cinema , the father registered the 16-year-old daughter for a casting . The former UFA actor Arthur Duarte was looking for an actress for his film A Menina da Rádio after the planned Milú had surprisingly withdrawn into private life in 1943. Eugenia received the role and, with the success of the film itself, gained popularity. As a result, she made a few more entertainment films, also internationally. She also gained considerable fame in Portugal through her film songs, and she often appeared on the radio and on her own concert tours.

She turned down an emerging international career. After the last shooting in 1947, she married the doctor António Pinto do Amaral in 1948 and withdrew completely into private life.

reception

An innocent beauty and happy singer, she became a star in the hit Portuguese entertainment films of the 1940s. Beyond that, however, her acting resources were limited, which she was aware of and which led her not to pursue any further acting career. In addition, she did not intend to adapt to the casual manners of show business and therefore chose to withdraw into private life.
