The Basilica Maria Hilf ( Spanish Basílica de María Auxiliadora ) is a Roman Catholic church in La Paz , the seat of government in Bolivia . The church in the Archdiocese of La Paz is consecrated to the Mother of God Maria under the patronage of Mary, Help of Christians and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

The construction of the church began in 1946 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Salesian factory in La Paz. The construction of the basilica from 1950 to 1969 was directed by the Italian engineer Vittorio Aloisio. Institutions of the Salesians of Don Bosco are attached to the church. On September 24, 2000, Pope John Paul II raised the church to the rank of minor basilica.

Building

The three-aisled basilica is considered due to its Art Deco style as an important representative of modern architecture in La Paz. In the cross-shaped structure have been used at curved lines and re-interpreted the design language of Gothic and pure lines.

Three portals with wooden gates under angular arches lead into the bright church. The bell tower rises above the entrance and consists of three diminishing bodies.

The crossing dome , together with the exquisitely crafted stained glass windows in the chancel and the upper cladding, illuminates the church, whose main and side altars and floors are made of Italian, polychrome marble .

The church is decorated with images of the Virgin of Cotoca , Mary, Aid of the Christians and John the Baptist .
