Maria Isabel Barreno

Maria Isabel Barreno (born July 10, 1939 in Lisbon ; † September 3, 2016 there ) was a Portuguese writer and feminist .

She studied history and philosophy at the Faculty of Literature at the University of Lisbon and became known in Portugal for the feminist epistolary novel Neue Portugiesische Briefe, which she wrote together with Maria Velho da Costa and Maria Teresa Horta . After graduating, she worked for several years at the National Institute for Industrial Research. She later worked as a journalist and from 1990 to 1993 was editor-in-chief of the Portuguese edition of Marie Claire magazine . From 1997 to 2003 she was responsible for Portuguese teaching in France in the cultural department of the Portuguese embassy in Paris. As a writer, she repeatedly dealt with the situation of women in society in her great work of philosophical fiction A Morte da Mãe , but also in sociological studies. Maria Isabel Barreno's literary work is extremely diverse. It comprises ten novels of very different types: from A Morte da Mãe to historical novels such as Crónica do Tempo and O Senhor das Ilhas (Eng: The Lord of the Islands), various volumes of short stories, philosophical essays and sociological treatises.

Barreno received various literary prizes in Portugal, such as the Premio Fernando Namora and the Premio Camilo Castelo Branco and in 2004 the Order of Dom Infante Henrique from the Portuguese state. It has a total of around 24 publications.
